Many people in the western world have traveled but few choose to take just a backpack and be ready for an adventure. The comfort of knowing where to go, of knowing the hotel is nationally or internationally present and recognized and of knowing that a McDonalds or a Starbucks is just around the corner has provided many with a security blanket. There is not much that can shock you if you move in the realms of what is known to you. Traveling with a backpack, hopping from one youth hostel to the next, and going to food markets instead of grocery stores can be exhilarating, scary but most of all memorable.

The Marriott, Ritz, or Best Western are hotels that enable travelers to take a piece from home overseas. The rooms look the same, the food can be prepared similar and the people will speak English. For first time travelers this is an option that provides a good introduction to the feeling of being away from home, and possibly not knowing the language while having a safe haven to retreat to. On the other hand once the first trip is made, it is time to truly experience what a country has to offer by diving into the culture, the back alleys, the parts of the city away from main attractions. These places show you where the true overseas experience and the value in traveling lie.
